Sacred Heart Obstetric Center receives accreditation

Spokane, WA - The Center for Maternal-Fetal Medicine of the Sacred Heart Women's Health Center has been granted a three-year accreditation in Obstetric Ultrasound by the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine (AIUM).

AIUM accreditation, a voluntary peer-review process, involves a stem-to-stern, top-to-bottom check-up on all aspects of an ultrasound practice. These aspects include doctor qualifications, physical facilities, the ultrasound machines, the detailed instructions for performing each ultrasound test, and the policies in place for safeguarding the health and safety of every patient who has an ultrasound examination, plus much more.

Reinaldo Acosta, MD, is program director for the Center for Maternal-Fetal Medicine, which opened in 2004 to provide diagnostic and treatment services to women in complicated or high-risk pregnancies.

"This accreditation provides a strong clinical foundation for our high-risk maternity program and is a critical part of the comprehensive care for women in our community," says Sherry Maughan, director of the Women's Health Center. "This achievement is even more impressive when you consider that the Center for Maternal-Fetal Medicine staff sought this certification on their own and worked diligently to complete the rigorous process."

The American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine, which began in the early 1950s, says its Ultrasound Practice Accreditation Council has developed standards that serve as a benchmark for ultrasound professionals seeking to meet nationally accepted protocols. In the end, that means the best possible care for patients.
