Sacred Heart celebrates organ donation month

Spokane, WA - April is National Donate Life Month and Sacred Heart Medical Center is celebrating by having three "Gift of Life" hybrid rose bushes planted near the organ donation flag at the main entrance.  A ceremony will take place on Thursday, April 20, 11 a.m., followed by a reception at the Providence Center for Faith and Healing.

During the ceremony, the rose bushes will be planted by people who represent the good work of organ donation and transplantation: a Spokane dad whose infant became an organ donor after a tragic accident; a woman who, thanks to a cornea transplant, can see again after having been blind for 20 years; and several Sacred Heart nurses who care for patients during the transplant process.

The month-long observance of organ donation began in 2003 and serves to educate the public on the importance of organ, tissue, marrow and blood donation. The Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network reports there are currently 91,684 people on waiting lists to receive organs. In 2005,14,489 donors made it possible for 28,110 donations of organs and tissues to occur.

The Gift of Life rose was bred in Portland and won the best of show at a rose garden event there.  Northwest Tissue is donating the three bushes being planted at Sacred Heart.

The ceremony is open to the public.
