SEATTLE, SPOKANE, Wash. – The boards of directors of Providence Services and Providence Health System have agreed to formally explore combining the health, long term care, housing and education services of the two systems into a single, new integrated ministry. Both organizations are under the sponsorship of the Sisters of Providence, whose ministry covers dozens of communities in Alaska, Washington, Montana, Oregon and California.
“We have a shared heritage with our common sponsorship of the Sisters of Providence, a commitment to our shared missions and values, and a desire to ensure quality services for another 150 years,” said Rich Umbdenstock, president/CEO, Providence Services.
Next steps will include establishing planning teams made up of staff from both organizations to begin the due diligence work in forming a new Providence organization. The joint boards will meet again in December to consider final action on creating one integrated ministry.
“In addition to furthering our ministry, we also recognize that a true partnership would allow us to capitalize on the strengths of both organizations,” said John Koster, M.D., president/CEO, Providence Health System. “We know that leading health care organizations must continue to focus on the highest quality while at the same time ensuring wise use of resources.”
Both Providence Services and Providence Health System have strong positions in the regions they serve. A single ministry would include 27 hospitals, more than 35 non-acute facilities, physician clinics, health plans, a liberal arts university, 45,000 employees and numerous other health and education services.
“In 1898 Mother Joseph told the sisters that they must nourish and develop the works of their ministry,” said Sister Margaret Botch, Provincial Superior, Sisters of Providence. “Combining our two major Providence organizations would sustain the Providence mission of caring for the poor and vulnerable, and allow our ministry to grow and thrive.”
