Spokane, WA - Sacred Heart Medical Center recently completed several expansion projects-a new Pediatric Surgery Center, Pediatric Multi-specialty Clinic, Post-anesthesia Care Unit and Outpatient Pharmacy.
The Pediatric Surgery Center, named in memory of the late James Carson, MD, is part of ''phase three'' of the Children's Hospital expansion projects that began in 2003. The Center is designed to complement the themes of other Children's Hospital departments to create a child-friendly environment. In the Pediatric Surgery Center, which opened for service on June 6, children receive specialized attention prior to and following their surgical procedures. The 8,000-square-foot space includes play areas, a teen room, private waiting areas and nine recovery rooms.
''We've gone out of our way to create a less intimidating environment for our special young patients,'' says Peggy Mangiaracina, executive director for the Children's Hospital. ''Surgery is a scary experience, so anything we can do to lessen their fears helps them have a better overall experience.''
Another addition to the Children's Hospital's array of services is the Pediatric Multi-specialty Clinic. This office is home to pediatric surgery specialists (Diane McCarthy, MD; Paul Thorne, MD; and James Fischer, MD) as well as pediatric gastroenterology and nutrition experts (Linda Muir, MD, and Bridget Raleigh, ARNP). These complement other specialties available at the Children's Hospital, which include cardiology, neurology, oncology, developmental medicine, ophthalmology, endocrinology, neurosurgery, pulmonology, psychiatry, plastic surgery and urology as well as outpatient services like spina bifida, feeding and growth and fetal alcohol clinics.
Likewise with the main operating room, the Medical Center planned multiple phases of construction for its new Surgery Center. Phase one was complete in August 2004 when the region's most technologically-advanced operating rooms opened for service. This May, phase two was complete as the old surgery center was remodeled into a new Post-anesthesia Care Unit (PACU). The PACU's square footage increased from 2,928 to 8,640, featuring 25 bays where patients receive post-operative care before being admitted to a nursing floor or discharged to return home. The final phase of the Surgery Center's remodeling includes moving the pre-surgical screening services from lower level three to the (main floor?) where patients check in for procedures.
This month, the Medical Center's Outpatient Pharmacy opened in a new location-the Main Floor, just inside the main entrance. Patients being discharged from the nursing units or from the Emergency Department often need to fill prescriptions before heading home. The new location is intended to be more convenient for those patients as well as others who wish to use the Sacred Heart Pharmacy on a routine basis. Included in the main floor remodel project was an expansion of the Gift Shop, located adjacent to the Pharmacy.
One other change visitors to the Medical Center campus may notice is the construction of a parking facility at the corner of McClellan and 7th Avenue. Sacred Heart purchased the Clinic Center Motel, which formerly occupied this space, and is planning to build a multi-level parking facility to be completed in summer 2006.
