Providence Cancer Center physician appointed to national commission

Anders Merg, MDAnders Merg, MD, director of Surgical Oncology at Providence Cancer Center, a partnership of Holy Family Hospital and Sacred Heart Medical Center, recently received a three-year appointment by the American College of Surgeons as a Cancer Liaison Physician.

Cancer Liaison physicians play an integral role in cancer programs approved the College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer. Dr. Merg, who has significant interest in the diagnosis and treatment of patients with malignant diseases, joins a network of more than 1,600 volunteer physicians who provide leadership and direction in support of their facilities' cancer programs.

As a Cancer Liaison Physician, Dr. Merg will spearhead Commission on Cancer initiatives at Providence Cancer Center; collaborate with local agencies, such as the American Cancer Society; and facilitate quality improvement initiatives, utilizing data from the Commission's extensive database of cancer diagnosis, tumor characteristics, treatment and outcomes.

The Commission on Cancer is a 46-member consortium of professional organizations dedicated to improving the survival and quality of life for cancer patients, through standard-setting, cancer prevention, research and education. For more information, visit www.facs.org/cancer.
